G. Crabtree
Home Building

Building in Durham, Chatham, and Orange Counties since 1983

G. Crabtree Home Building has deep roots in this part of North Carolina. Gail Crabtree's mother said it well, when she
noted that in 300 years the family has moved only thirty miles from Orange to Durham County!  Like us, many of
suppliers, subcontractors, and craftspeople are family owned businesses. Gail comes from a family of builders going
back to her grandfather who was a shipbuilder in Wilmington and homebuilder in Durham County. Her father, uncle,
two brothers, sister, and niece all worked in the homebuilding business.

After seven years of learning the business from her family, Gail Crabtree started her own company with the goal of
building high quality homes of the type she would want to live in herself. Rama Mills worked with Gail from the start
and became a partner in the business in 1988. These two women have built 260 plus homes in the Triangle. Their
homes feature lots of storage, many windows, porches big enough to use, specialty tile work in the baths and fireplaces,
and a wonderful sense of style. Walk into one of these welcoming homes, and you will know why folks who care about
the details choose G. Crabtree Home Building!

On June 3, 2002, the Historic Preservation Society of Durham presented G. Crabtree Home Building a Neighborhood
Conservation Award for Knox Landing-- our homes located at 305-405 West Knox Street.  The only award given for
new construction, it was said that our homes would be worthy of preservation 50 years from now! But why wait? You
can find your dream home today.
Weldon Ridge
Weldon Ridge is in Orange County near Hwy.70 and I-85. It features one acre lots and  Crabtree Craftsman
style homes. Located 10 minutes from Hillsborough, Chapel Hill, and Durham, this neighborhood is convenient
to everything. And like the true craftsman homes of the last century, they  possesses many special touches:
designer tile work around the fireplaces and the two full baths; real cedar shakes; and lots of oak flooring.

G. Crabtree Home Building believes that it is important to be a part of the community. The issues of housing and shelter are of great
concern to us, as home builders. At the end of 2006, we received a Sustaining Donor Award from the
Durham Community Land
Trustees, Inc. This award is presented to those who have supported the Land Trust for over ten years. We are also long term supporters
of
Genesis Home, serving homeless families; Durham Crisis Response Center (DCRC), providing housing for battered women and their
children; as well as
Habitat for Humanity, and the Durham Urban Ministries. G. Crabtree Homebuilding is a member of the Watts Hill
Leadership Circle of
Preservation Durham (formally  the Historic Preservation Society of Durham.) We also contribute to Strong
Women Organized for Outrageous Projects (SWOOP), The Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association (ECWA), and the Triangle Land
Conservancy among others.

We recommend these organizations to others who want to make our community a better place for all!

While we have built homes for years that respected the earth and were energy efficient, in the Fall of 2007, we deepened
our commitment when we joined the Green Building Initiative and Energy Star Certification programs. We felt that we
should build green because we care about our home buyers, the community, and the earth. Building green involves
increasing the efficiency of our homes and their use of energy, water, and materials; improving the quality of the
environment in the home itself; and effecting the land in the gentlest way possible. Building green means that we are
committed to building homes that are healthy and comfortable, that operate at lower costs by reducing energy and water
use, and that create lasting value for the home owner.  We will use sustainable building practices, high performance or
renewable materials, and recycle. We will take care of the earth where the new home is located, saving as many trees as
possible. We leave much of the lot in its natural state, preserving biodiversity. By building green, we improve the indoor
and out door air and reduce impacts on the local infrastructure. Green building means a more durable home with less
maintenance, which means fewer resources are used over time. In 2009, in addition to building green certified homes,
Gail Crabtree became a Certified Green Professional!
